Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family go about their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
