Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed outrage after former President Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Message That Sparked the Controversy
The clip, published on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who previously served in military or security capacities.
"Like us, you all swore an pledge to protect and uphold this constitution," the officials stated in the brief video. "And right now, the dangers to our governing document are not only from overseas, but from within our own country. Our laws are explicit, you can decline illegal orders, you can reject illegal orders, you should reject illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that contravene the statutes or our constitution."
The Former President's Furious Reaction
The video message appeared to prompt a angry reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he declared: "This is really bad, and Risky to our Nation. Their statements cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials Answer
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership issued a joint announcement censuring the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no position in this nation," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our United States with exceptional national pride and distinction. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the security of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these radical digital publications and withdraw his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the declaration continued.
Lawmakers' Strong Answer
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also published a response.
"We are former service members and defense specialists who value this country and made an oath to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they said. "This commitment is permanent, and we intend to keep it. No intimidation, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president views it liable to punishment by execution for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their protection as they execute their pledge to the constitution and obligation to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "Every American must join forces and denounce the ex-president's demands for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a period for moral clarity."
Additional Governmental Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's statements and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the death of elected officials."
He stated: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, all representatives, the entire nation – regardless of party – should denounce this without delay and unconditionally."
The Conservative official justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "It is very dangerous, you have important representatives of Congress telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that's unprecedented in US history."
The GOP official also allegedly stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the crime of treason" but that "lawyers have to analyze the terminology and decide all that."
Administration Response
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to kill elected officials?", the executive branch representative responded: "No."
"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the spokesperson declared. "We see sitting members of the American legislature who worked together to organize a recorded statement to personnel of the US military, to serving soldiers advising them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She stated: "The purity of our military depends on the chain of command, and if that system is violated, it can cause fatalities, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are essentially encouraging."
