Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.
A new acronym surfaced several months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is found only in Gaza, per insights from health professionals including child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for physicians to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their whole family. However, there has been nothing “normal” about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about many doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being systematically aimed at.
A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are continuing. Authorities rejects these accusations, consistent with how it denies each claim it is accused of. But while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, although several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, we are told, is what unity looks like.
Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems completely different.
Contradictory Principles
Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that global media are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it once represented. An institution that initially championed togetherness has now become a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
