Hamilton Island, a Iconic Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has built in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the land is developed, including a significant array of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
