Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side

The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.

Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
