The French government advises residents to depart Mali urgently following Islamist petroleum restrictions

Fuel queues in Mali
Long queues have been wrapping around petrol stations

The French Republic has delivered an immediate warning for its people in Mali to depart as soon as feasible, as jihadist fighters continue their blockade of the state.

The Paris's external affairs department advised individuals to exit using commercial flights while they are still accessible, and to refrain from road journeys.

Energy Emergency Worsens

A two-month-old petroleum embargo on Mali, established by an al-Qaeda-aligned organization has overturned daily life in the capital, the capital city, and other regions of the landlocked Sahel region state - a former French colony.

France's announcement coincided with the maritime company - the largest global transport corporation - stating it was suspending its activities in Mali, citing the blockade and declining stability.

Militant Operations

The Islamist organization Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin has caused the blockage by assaulting tankers on main routes.

Mali has limited sea access so all fuel supplies are transported by highway from neighboring states such as the neighboring country and Ivory Coast.

International Response

Last month, the US embassy in the capital declared that support diplomatic workers and their households would leave Mali amid the situation.

It mentioned the petroleum interruptions had affected the supply of electricity and had the "potential to disrupt" the "comprehensive stability environment" in "unforeseen manners".

Governance Situation

The West African nation is currently ruled by a military leadership commanded by Gen Assimi GoĂŻta, who originally assumed authority in a military takeover in the past decade.

The armed leadership had popular support when it assumed control, committing to handle the extended stability issues prompted by a separatist rebellion in the northern region by ethnic Tuaregs, which was later co-opted by jihadist fighters.

Foreign Deployment

The international peace mission and France's military had been stationed in recent years to address the escalating insurgency.

Both have left since the junta took over, and the armed forces administration has hired foreign security contractors to combat the insecurity.

However, the militant uprising has persisted and extensive regions of the north and east of the state persist outside government control.
