The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate souls, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
