Thomas Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Star Sets Aside Egotism Outside.

A single omission was enough. A second one and it might have appeared spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to understand that securing World Cup glory will likely need help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally on the midfielder to fit into the tactical structures and player rankings essential with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's warm embrace.

Tuchel desires his aggressive mentality, his intensity, but it is a matter of harnessing it in the right way. Individual quality counts but England know from bitter experience that there is a price to pay when fame takes over. Still, a statement has been delivered.

Bellingham had much to ponder after his omission of last month’s squad. He observed England book their place at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach talk about valuing the squad's spirit and principles. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in champion style, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid against Barcelona and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.

The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham concentrating on intimidating opponents rather than teammates. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period not playing has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a valuable, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now offer support around the youngster after proving that he is unafraid to take tough decisions.

“There is no problem regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” the German commented. “Jude just has that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to succeed at the top that he has. Everyone must support him and establish a setting where he can [have] that intensity in matches and for the objectives we are building as a team.”

Bellingham took up most of the attention at the team news conference for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers versus one opponent and the other. Who else? Well, what about another talent? Here is another prodigious No 10 in need of support and direction. He has been absent for the national team since spring and has found it hard to reach his best recently but Tuchel could not ignore the player after his performance in his club's victory versus the German side recently.

The question, though, is the best way to deploy the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be a good argument to select Cole Palmer once he recovers from a fitness issue. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the tournament be an overkill? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing both stars into the team, cramping Harry Kane’s style in the process.

It seems unlikely Tuchel repeating that if it hurts the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for Foden, who has to be through the middle. The coach wants him close to Kane. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at left wing? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “He will play in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision about him for years. I think it fits his style the most.”

Tuchel conceded there are times when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has obvious passion to play football, then clearly an issue exists, be it his role, the setup, I don’t know.

“I think he is additionally so used to playing for Man City in a specific system, with a defined role. Believe he benefits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defensive duties?”

The manager discussed Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and the other netting strikes from outside the box. He added he has a extended list of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his fine form for City at defense. Interest is high.

Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, he suggested deploying the playmaker as a false 9 against one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are other options if Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for trying new things.

At the same time, it is additionally a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter setting up the captain to net in an international match versus the Scots in September 2023 to find the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. Tuchel will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is missing.

“At this point eventually it falls to the duty of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to be blunt. Remains a feeling of the player being on trial. He may not be assured to start against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants Bellingham onside but he will be observing him closely. Set aside the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an more effective one.
